Someone wants Captain Admiral Zander Graydon dead. Like yesterday. Zander’s convinced his attractive assistant knows more than she’s willing to say, and if he can stop running long enough, he’ll find out exactly what she’s hiding. Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros is determined to keep her CO safe. Before she tips her hand, however, Mae has to figure out if the alluring man she’s protecting is the real Captain Admiral Graydon. Or an alien shape-shifting imposter.

On the run and no one to trust…not even each other.

Captain Admiral Zander Graydon has seen a lot of action, but almost getting killed three times in one day is pushing it. Only the company of his new assistant, Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros, makes things a little easier to swallow. Except the delectable Lieutenant Marshal Petros is hiding a number of secrets, and her presence might have something to do with the continued attempts on his life.

It’s no accident Lieutenant Marshal Mae Petros finds herself in the firing line alongside the charming but very off-limits Captain Admiral Graydon. She’s taken the job as the admiral’s assistant to determine if a shape-shifting alien has killed the CO and assumed his form. Whether the admiral is human or not, Mae finds herself getting way too close to him as they run for their lives.

Military to the core, Mae and Zander will have to overcome their suspicions of each other to work together, when they realize the fate of the entire universe is at stake.

10 Facts About Quantum

1) This book was written in two completely separate halves about seven years apart – I started Quantum within a year of writing Atrophy in 2008, but when I was unable to sell Atrophy, I didn’t think there was much point in finishing Quantum, so I moved on to other projects. Then, when I sold Atrophy to Entangled, one of the first things I did was get Quantum out and finish it nearly seven years later.

2) When I was writing Captain Admiral Zander Graydon, I was seeing Josh Duhamel. Need I say more?

3) Because I do no plotting whatsoever, when I was writing the two separate storylines of Zander and Mae being on the run, and Rian on the Imojenna with his crew, for a while I had absolutely no idea how I was going to bring the two plots together.

4) Luckily Rian’s cousin, Captain Qaelan Forster came along and that problem was fixed. But then I had a space pirate to deal with, who continually claims he’s not a pirate, and is like a mash-up of Captain Jack Sparrow and Damon Salvatore… yeah, figure that one out.

5) I realized half way through this book that the shape-shifting aliens were almost unbeatable and my heroes needed a way to be able to work out who was an alien, and who was human. So I had to throw in the accidental discovery of an energy weapon that could reveal the Reidar and hope it did seem too convenient or contrived.

6) The opening plot of Zander and Mae crash-landing and then hiking through the wilderness was actually cannibalized from the first (unpublished) romantic suspense I wrote. I really liked the concept, so decided to use it on a distant planet to throw Zander and Mae together, forcing them to get to know one another more quickly.

7) And when I first sat down to write the book, I thought the entire story for Zander and Mae would only be about them surviving and escaping the wilderness. But of course characters have a mind of their own and these two are resourceful. They got out of the wilderness a lot quicker than I expected and then went off and did their own thing.

8) I’ve always loved doppleganger storylines, so the one thing I knew about the ending was that Zander would face off with his evil twin. I really enjoyed writing that scene, it’s probably one of my favorites in the book.

9) In the first draft, when Zander and Mae joined the crew of the Ebony Winter, Qaelan Forster had two more people on his ship, but then my editor gently suggested that I had way too many people and needed to cut some out to save confusion and book over-crowding.

10) At the beginning of the book, there was a scene where Mae meets Rian in a seedy bar on an outer-system spacestation, and he tells her his suspicions of Zander. Unfortunately, because Quantum was such a long book, I decided it needed to go, but I’m hoping to release some extra content soon, featuring this deleted scene among other things.

Jess Anastasi Bio:

Jess has been making up stories ever since she can remember. Though her messy handwriting made it hard for anyone else to read them, she wasn’t deterred and now she gets to make up stories for a living. She loves loud music, a good book on a rainy day, and probably spends too much time watching too many TV shows. Jess lives in regional Victoria, Australia, with her very supportive husband, three daughters, two hyper-active border collie dogs, and one cat who thinks he’s one of the kids.
