Defending Hayden_Dover

The Carolina Cougars keep fighting for love as the Second Chances series from bestselling author L. P. Dover continues! In Defending Hayden, a damaged football star teams up with the only woman who can take the pain away.

No one’s tougher than Carolina Cougars linebacker Derek McLaughlin. But when a fatal car accident claims the life of his girlfriend, Derek finds himself caught in a destructive spiral of drugs, alcohol, and meaningless sex. But not even a string of one-night stands can ease the hurt. Football is all he has left. Then fate leads him back to the scene of the crash, and into the arms of a kind, gorgeous woman who sees past his façade to the man he once was . . . and can be again.

When a chance roadside encounter brings Derek into her life, veterinarian Hayden Hunter isn’t fooled by his bad attitude: All bark and no bite, he’s hiding a wounded heart beneath that gruff demeanor. And Hayden wants to be the one to kiss it all better. Soon they both find that a dose of passion is potent medicine. But when a hidden enemy lashes out at Hayden, Derek steps up to do what he does best: put his body on the line in the name of love.

REVIEW

The Rule Book follows Lainey as she starts her new job as a second assistant. She finds herself stuck with some outrageous rules made by her boss, Brogan Starr, and she cannot seem to not embarrass herself around him. Thrust in his world she learns more about the man behind the rules, and forgets her own rule about not falling in love with him.

“He didn’t complete me, because hell, I was complete to begin with, but he was the perfect complement, one that I’d be hard pressed to find in someone else.”

Lainey was a really fun heroine; I loved her awkwardness and ramblings. However, her internal ramblings got really long that the focus on the scene dissipated. Brogan seemed like a nice, smexy boss, however, his character felt uni-dimensional. And, the romance fell flat as well; I liked it was a slow burn, however, I didn’t really feel the chemistry – with Lainey’s rambling and lack of knowing Brogan’s thoughts it just didn’t work for me.

I think I would have enjoyed it more had it also included Brogan’s perspective. Other than that, it was a fun read and Lainey was a great heroine.

 REVIEW

My rating: 4 stars

Charged follows Avett Walker and Quaid Jackson. After the incident at the bar Avett finds herself in legal trouble, thanks to Asa she finds herself with lawyer, Quaid. From his first meeting with Avett, Quaid knows this case isn’t going to be a usual for him – there’s something about her honesty that intrigues him and makes him act differently.

In the Marked Men series I was not really fond of Avett, I mean I really did not like her, but after reading this my opinion about her completely changed – she is a cinnamon roll that needs to be protected at all cost. I just wanted to hold her and tell her everything will be alright and it’s not her fault; I’m glad Quaid was there to do that. She was so broken she didn’t realise the amazing support she had around her – she was drowned in her mistakes that she felt she didn’t deserve the support she received. Her emotional growth was a pleasure to read.

Quaid was absolutely drool-some, ahhh Legal Eagle *_*. He was dealing with his own demons but he overcame them and that was fantastic. There wasn’t much of a character growth, it was more like him breaking down his wall and becoming himself. He was pretty amazing to begin with and when he shed his walls I knew I was a goner.

The chemistry between Avett and Quaid was explosive, and while the romance was steamy and swoon-worthy, the story was much more than that. It was about not letting your past define you, but how you move forward from it. The story had me on the edge of my seat till the very end.

I loved the appearance of old character and some new ones. There were hints for future stories and I, for one, cannot wait. I’m not sure whose story I want more first, I kind of want both right now. I shall patiently wait for the next one.

EXCERPT

Quaid

She let her arms fall and scooted forward on the chair. She leaned forward and looked at me intently. Her eyes were mesmerizing and I found myself distracted by all the different colors trapped there. I had to ask her to repeat herself when I realized she said something and was waiting for a response from me. I needed to get my head in the game where this girl was concerned…this girl…that was the part I seemed to keep forgetting.

“What did you say?” My voice dipped lower than it normally was and I shifted in my seat as other parts of me started to notice all the interesting and attractive things about Avett Walker as well.

“I said, I Googled you.” She swept some of her hair back from where it had fallen over her shoulder, and I literally had to force myself to keep my gaze locked on her face as the motion pushed her chest up higher and tighter against the plain, black T-shirt she had on.

“Oh, yeah? How did that work out for you?” I knew what she would find: my service record, my wedding announcement, my work history from the firm, various tidbits on my most high profile cases, and various articles chronicling my divorce. Most divorces weren’t newsworthy, but when one of the people involved came from money and the other was as high profile as I was, it made for good filer on a slow news day. I was curious to see what her interpretation of the snapshot of my life that existed on the internet was.

She got up from the chair and started to pace back and forth in front of my desk as she talked. “It worked out well enough, I guess. I saw that you were enlisted when you were younger, which explains why my dad immediately liked you.” She looked at me over her shoulder and a tiny grin tugged at her mouth. “He doesn’t usually like anyone instantly. It takes him a while to warm up.”

I listened with half an ear as I watched her brightly colored hair swish around her shoulders. She didn’t come across as the girly or overly feminine type, so I wondered why she had gone with such a delicate and pretty pink when coloring her hair.

“I learned that you’re a Colorado native, that you grew up in the mountains, that your birthday is right around Christmas, which means you’re almost thirty-two, so you’ve accomplished a lot in your career in a short amount of time. I also learned that you own a lot of suits.”

I snorted out a surprised laugh at that last part, which made her stop pacing. She took a step closer to my desk and put her hands on the opposite edge, leaning forward. The new position made her T-shirt gape at the collar, and even though I refused to look down, I could see the hint of a leopard-print bra peeking out. That hint of something forbidden made my mouth go dry and had my pulse kicking. It was a powerful reaction to very little provocation, and I made myself beat it back, forcibly.

And don’t miss the first titles in The Saints of Denver Series!

Review

My rating: 2 stars

Cross the Stars is a story about star-crossed lovers, Ella and Rajaa. Ella Wallace is the daughter of a congressman who has been trying to pave her own path. Her parents have not been very supportive and when she cannot take anymore she decides to do the only logical thing – she takes up an internship where she teaches English in Jordan during the summer. She meets Prince Rajaa, the younger Prince of the Jordanian Royal Family, who is funding the teaching program for the Syrian Refugees. Sparks fly and the rest is history.

I admit I was a bit wary when I started. I may have not enjoyed it as much, but that probably has to do with some of the incorrect terms – for example Kimball kept referring the ‘veil’ as a hijab and the ‘hijab’ as a niqab (a type of covering where only the eyes are visible). I also found it a bit unrealistic that Ella was able to learn a bit Arabic in two weeks. As someone who has been learning Arabic for years (still learning), I have to say it is not easy, and I still don’t know it.

I found Ella annoying and whiny. I could not really connect with her. I did, however, like how she decided not to be a robot and pave her own way, and her fondness for the refugee students. Speaking of the refugee students I love their story, it was heart-breaking finding about their backstories, but I love how they preserved.

The insta-love was so annoying. They see each other at a party and their special gaze stirred feelings. Then they catch one another when the elevator is closing. When they finally converse they’re already really deep in their feelings for one another. I would have preferred they developed the relationship rather than them combusting. Also, Raja was willing to throw everything away for Ella, someone he barely knows. With the political tension in the Middle East, his willingness to throw everything away was off putting, especially when we were shown how much he wanted to improve Jordan’s conditions.

The premise is great and it’s why I wanted to read this, but the execution did not work for me. I don’t see myself reading the sequel.

I received this book in exchange of an honest review.

Excerpt

Prologue

In moments like these, everything slowed. Salem always joked that it was life’s way of making sure you didn’t miss the turning points, the important bits. As if gravity sank heavier and heavier with the weight of the moment until the world was too heavy to turn and everyone held their breath.
It certainly felt like that now. My next action, my next word, would change all of our lives.
“Aria,” Clay’s deep voice reached my ears. “Whatever happens…I love you.” The usual assuredness and authority was gone. Instead, strain and hurt had crumpled up and shoved into his throat. Choose me. Save me. Love me.
Before him my life had felt like a stack of old movies; frames missing or out of order, muted crackling sound, flickering and shuttering away, unloved and unseen in an old unused cinema.
Then I found him. Or he found me.
He created a warm shield around me where I could be safe. He coaxed away all my layers and shed all my masks and his love soaked right into my skin, right into the very soul of me. He pulled out the fossil buried inside that had been my heart and breathed life into me.
How could I give up the man I loved? The one who loved me with a fierce and unwavering passion, the man who made me feel like I could defeat demons as long as he was by my side.
Winking in the threads of sunlight piercing through the solemn gray clouds, seed fluff twirled about me like swirling, dancing couples. Spinning around like Salem and I used to do in our backyard, hands clasped together tightly, turning round and round, eyes to the sky, our twin voices giggling and floating into the air like dandelions.
She had been my shield before Clay.
“I’m nothing without you, Aria,” Salem’s voice trembled, desperation leaking into the breaths between her words. Choose me. Need me. Love me.
How could I end her? I just got her back. For so long we shared almost everything, and she protected me. Her whole life had been about protecting me. Because she loved me that much.
How could I turn against her, toss her away like an old broken toy?
But I had to choose.
I could see us now, the three of us making a chain like when I was a kid, folding pieces of colored paper into rectangles, cutting out an arm, a leg, and half a head, and unfurling my new patterns in the light to reveal a line of paper dolls. Clay, Salem and I − we were all just paper dolls in a paper chain, me in the middle, each end pulling tighter and tighter until something had to tear.
Even now as I stare between Clay and Salem, trying to digest our impossible situation, Hope is still there, that terrible pixie, fluttering on my shoulder, whispering.
Maybe it doesn’t have to end this way?
Fuck you, Hope. Here’s the truth.
Nobody is coming.
No one will save us.
And someone isn’t going to make it out of this forest today.
“Choose,” my sister screamed. “It’s either him or me.”
My fingers tightened around my gun in a reflex. This was it. I either ended her. Or destroyed Clay.
I squeezed my eyelids shut for a moment, just for a moment of peace. Just for an instant I could shut out the inevitable, and in this blessed darkness I believed I could conceive a way that both could exist in my life. A way that I could choose Salem and Clay.
You can’t have both.
You tried.
You.
Can’t.
Have.
Both.
Choose now.
But how?
What do you do when someone puts a gun to your head? Clay’s words came back to me, echoing as loud in my mind as if he had just spoken them. You refuse to bend. You push back. You find another way. You take that gun off him and put it back in his face. But you do not give in.
Find another way…
I knew what I had to do. A kind of peace settled on my skin, as delicate as gossamer, as light as silk.
I opened my eyes to a world of bright light until my vision adjusted. The torn and pained faces of the two people I loved came into focus. The only two people I’ve shared air with while we slept, the same two people I’d crawl into Hell to be with, and the only two people I would die for. I forced the ghost of a smile forward.
And turned the gun on myself.

It was supposed to be the best day. I was marrying the love of my life–and nothing would ever be the same.

And then he left me at the altar.

Five years later, I get a job offer I can’t refuse. The trouble is, the boss just so happens to be the one who got away…

Excerpt 1

Even from behind, he was something to behold. He had on a black leather jacket with a charcoal gray hoodie. On anyone else, it would have looked juvenile, hipster even. Like someone emulating ‘rugged’ based on what they saw in a magazine or on some TV show. This guy was all man, all testosterone with his broad shoulders and jeans that gripped an ass that I was dying to grip.

Realizing that I was staring at some stranger’s behind, my eyes shot up to tamer territory, but his dark wavy hair was even more dangerous. It was just long enough that he could do that man-bun thing that was all the rage. But nothing about this man was forced. He didn’t follow trends; he made his own. His dark locks were wild and free.

I hadn’t even seen his face, but I knew he was trouble. With a capital T. Which meant I was in trouble, because if I wasn’t sure I was gonna take the job before, well, I was positive now.

“Oh! Mr. Carraway, I didn’t know you were on site today.”

I gasped.

No.

The allure, that instant draw…I should have known. It had only happened once before when I was partnered with the hottest guy at Rhoades High in Advanced Chem.

He turned from the espresso machine and I stopped breathing.

Lincoln Carraway smiled at me like a wolf about to rip out the throat of its prey.

“Welcome to Make a Change, Catherine.”

TOWGATeaser

Excerpt 2

I don’t know if he hit the emergency brake or I did, but the elevator jolted and we weren’t going anywhere. We were frozen in this place. A place where the past was forgotten and we slipped back into the warm deliciousness of memories.

My fingers slipped through his hair and I pulled him close, quivering from head to toe when I felt the solid wall of muscle pressed against me. His hands took possession of me, sweeping over my hips, gliding over the swell of my breasts and before he even got to my nipples that were swollen and aching for him, I was lost and found, all at the same time.

My mind was filled with two words. Don’t stop.
